IIT-H’s Vigyan Joyto to support 35 girls to pursue career in STEM

In an attempt to encourage more number of girls to take science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) as a career choice, IIT-H is hosting Vigyan Joyti, which is a two-week residential training program. The program began on May 12 and is training 35 meritorious girls of class 11. Prof UB Desai, director, IIT Hyderabad, talking about the importance of program said “Girls participation in technology development is a must. This workshop by the Teaching and Learning Center at IITH and the faculty of IITH will help in achieving gender parity in engineering and technology profession.” The training includes lectures, seminar, lab visit, hands-on sessions, do and discover, business quiz, students outing, personality development, yoga, newspaper reading and so on. The program is funded by the department of science and technology and will deal with the mental, physical and emotional fitness of the children. The students will also be introduced to various labs such as 3D printing, robotics, tinkerer's, materials science, physics, chemistry, and others. "Vigyan Jyothi Scholars program is addressing a key issue that despite the high priority that is placed on the STEM in schools, efforts to expand female interest and employment in the STEM and computer science are not working as well as intended. This is especially true in technology and engineering," said Deepthi Ravula, Chief executive officer of WE- Hub.

The question papers of the core subjects in the classes IX and XI will be set by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) from this academic year. Earlier, the board used to set the question papers from classes X and XII. According to the council, the new system will help in maintaining the uniformity and standardized levels of teaching and will help familiarize the students with the Board exam system. The new decision was announced by the council chief executive and secretary Gerry Arathoon in a letter to all schools. The letter said that board seeks the complete cooperation of the schools in the new initiative and support will make the initiative a success. "These (question papers) will be utilized by all its affiliated schools internally in the annual examinations. Two sets of question papers will be prepared for each of these levels, one for the hill schools to be conducted in November/ December and the other for the plain schools to be conducted in February/March," the letter states. The main aim of the decision is to introduce the uniformity in all schools across India and abroad regarding the syllabus to be completed in class IX and XI. The uniformity will further strengthen and streamline the education system. Sources further added that the decision was taken because the standard of the performance of the students was below normal in subjects like Science and social science. "The council doesn't allow lateral entry after class IX. Therefore, it is important that in class IX students are tested to improve the standard and know if the problem is with the curriculum or mode of learning-teaching," said a CISCE school principal.

Soon, the results of the board exams conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will be available. In a first of its kind initiative, the results will be available to the students directly through Google’s website. Till last year, the results of class 10 and 12 were available only through the official websites of the CBSE -- cbse.nic.in and cbseresults.nic.in. This new tie-up between the CBSE and Google will enable the students to check their results almost instantaneously. Earlier, students had to wait because of the server overload on the official CBSE’s website. Google Search Product Manager Shilpa Agrawal said “with over 260 million students enrolled in more than 1.5 million schools across India, Google believes having reliable, seamless, and safe access to education-related information is crucial”. Tie-up benefits The tie-up will help the students immensely as they will be able to check their exam score directly from the smart phones. The functionality is obviously available from the desktop as well. Besides this, students will also be able to locate the important information about other exams such as GATE, SSC CGL, CAT, and others. Apart from checking the results on Google students can also check the results on websites such as examresults.net and results.nic.in.

On one side, Braille books give liberty to the visually challenged people to read and on the other hand, these books also act as a barrier because normal people don’t know how to read them. Due to this limitation, visually challenged people find themselves going to the special schools for education. But for the first time, we have an opportunity where people with sight and visually challenged people can read the same book. A Delhi based venture has claimed that it has found an alternative to Braille books which can be read by both categories of people with equal efficiency. A New technique which can replace the braille The new books are printed with a special embossing technique which can be read by a visually challenged person and at the same time do not hinder the readability of the sighted reader. According to the creators, the new embossing technique has a lot of potential and scope in the field of mainstream education. “They are an invention of research and development work done in-house for nearly five years. The books being introduced by us are integrated with special embossing technique which does not disturb the readability of a sighted reader and at the same time can be read by a visually impaired person by sensing the tactile braille and images through their fingers,” said Puneet Arora, co-founder of Inklude. He further said that the product has been tested by several blind and low vision children. He further claimed that several institutions such as: Blind School at the All India Confederation of the Blinds - New DelhiDelhi Public Library at the Blind Relief Association - New DelhiXavier’s Resource Center for the Visually Impaired - MumbaiAkhil Bhartiya Netrahin Sangh - New Delhi have used the product successfully. “Children who are visually challenged are more reliant on touch or their tactile sense to experience the world. Unfortunately, braille books and aids available are not inclusive as a sighted teacher, parents can't teach a non-sighted child to read,” Arora said. "Because of this children are separated from the mainstream. Therefore we aim to send each and every visually challenged child into mainstream school and highly advocates the concept of integrated education for social fulfillment," he added.

The admit cards for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced 2018 exam have been released by the IIT Kanpur and the link to download the same is now active on the official website -- jeeadv.ac.in. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had released the mains results on April 30, 2018, in which 2.3 lakh students had qualified for the advanced exam. Achievements of the students A gold medal was won by the Anish Bhanwala of St Theresa's Convent Karnal in the Rapid fire pistol event in the men’s 25-meter category held in Gold Coast, Australia. In the South Asian Archery championship at Dhaka, three silver medals were won by the K Venkatadri of St John's High School, Vijayawada Sehajpreet of Ryan International School, Patiala brought home the gold medal as a member of the women's recurve team. The international tournament was held at Dhaka. Rekha of Rajkiya Sarvodya Kanya Vidyalaya, Dallupura, Delhi won wheelchair basketball championship and is now preparing for the world championship. Statements from the CBSE officials According to a senior CBSE official, "The special drive of the board to promote talents in sports led to a departure from the set practice of following the fixed exam schedule this year. There were six students who were to represent India at various sports events while other class 10 and 12 students were busy writing CBSE Board exams." An official on adding to this said, "We confirmed the same from the Sports Authority of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and gave special permission to two class 12 students and four class 10 students for appearing in board exams on later dates."
