Dr. Harshvardhan: Students should come forward to protect the environment

School children forms an important part and are future of any society and Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Dr. Harsh Vardhan urged the students to take an active part in protecting the protecting the environment and help government and society beat the pollution. Dr. Harshvardhan was present at the 'Envithon' - a mini-marathon organized to support the World Environment Day on June 5. At the event more than 10,000 students from 200 schools of Delhi-NCR were present. The minister also administered the pledge to the children under which they will undertake one Green Good Deed every day, to reduce the effects of pollution and plastic. Dr. Also flagged off the 'Envithon'run at Vinay Marg. Various cultural programs around the themes of plastic pollution and river conservation were also put up on the occasion. Similar ‘Envithons’ were also organized in the five other cities of the country. Various distinguished personalities such as Secretary, MoEF&CC, Shri C.K Mishra, Director General, Forest & Special Secretary, MoEF&CC, Shri Siddhanta Das, Additional Secretary, Shri A.K Jain and representative of United Nations Environment were present at the gathering.

No home-work may soon become a reality of Indian schools

No home-work policy for classes I and II may soon become a reality as Madras High Court passed a directive to do away with it. “We will definitely follow the order. I believe children should attend school to learn with fun and should not be put under any pressure. We shall study the order and do whatever is possible to reduce (academic) burden,” Javadekar said in a press release on Saturday. Javadekar expressed hope to pass the bill by amending the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, which will be tabled in the monsoon session of the Parliament. “The Congress has not allowed us to hold the Parliament session. By March 2019, each state will be able to bring back pass-fail in classes V and VIII. As many as 25 states including Bengal have agreed to the proposal,” he added. Once the pass-fail system is back, students can be detained in two classes for their poor performance and will be given two months before they can re-appear for the exams again. “Only if they fail in the second exam, they will have to repeat the class,” Javadekar said. In the June end, HRD is all set to unveil the new education policy. “It will be a comprehensive policy involving the education of the next generation,” he added.

Mukherjee on the mismatch between the skills of fresh graduates and industry needs

Bemoaning the wide gap between the skills required to work in the industry and the talents of the fresh graduates, former President Pranab Mukherjee urged the world-class institutions to focus on research and innovation so that India’s young population does not become demographic disaster. Present at a graduation ceremony, Mukherjee said that during the time of his presidency he was distressed to see that none of the institutes from India made it to the rankings by the international agencies. "I want each and every one (of the institution) be recognized worldwide and our academic performance should be at par with the institutions of world class," Mukherjee said. Mukherjee further said that more than 50 percent of the population of India will be below 25-years of the age in 2022 and if we cannot provide jobs to them, cannot create employment opportunities and cannot skilled them match the job requirements we will have unemployed graduates and post-graduates as industries will suffer for the skilled worker. "So these improvements have to be made. There must be a close nexus between the industry and the academic and these interactions will help the graduates coming out of the institutions find themselves employable," he said. He also stressed that India is lacking in fundamental research and no Indian scholar working in Indian institution has been recommended for the Nobel prize after 1933. Mukherjee asserted that policy makers, academicians and leaders from the education field will have to create an ambiance which will drive brilliant students towards the research and innovation. "If we can develop a spirit of innovation, if we emphasize on fundamental research, I am sure this demographic dividend will be truly dividend for us and will not be a demographic disaster," he said.

To ease the burden of the students, government to reduce the syllabus of NCERT

On Saturday, Union HRD minister Prakash Javadekar said that to ease the burden of the students, the government has decided to reduce the NCERT syllabus by half because it is cramped. He further said that the proposed amendment to the Right to Education (RTE) Act such empowering the state government to conduct the exams for classes 5 to 8 students and reviews on the no-detention policy, will be tabled in July before the Parliament. A new draft of the New Education Policy will also be tabled before the Union Cabinet by the end of this month. Apart from the education, a child needs to have physical education, life skills and value education as education is not merely remembering few points and writing them on the answer sheets said Javadekar in a press conference. "Education is comprehensive, to put to use one's cognitive and analytical abilities. That is true education ... The NCERT syllabus is so cramped. Hence we have decided to reduce the syllabus by half," the minister said. He also said that ministry has received around 37,000 suggestions from the stakeholders on classes, lessons and subjects and we are working on it. This will bring in the change in the education system as students will get time for various activities. He also said based on the changes each centrally-aided school will also get sports equipment. Primary schools, Upper primary schools and SSC and HSC level schools will get equipment worth INR 5000, 10,000 and 25,000 respectively. "The Congress did not allow Parliament to function earlier and hence the draft could not be taken up so far. I am now hopeful it will come up before Parliament in the July session as all parties have supported the freedom given to respective states (to decide on detention issue)," he said. "While 25 states, including West Bengal, want the exams which I welcome ... those who don't want I also respect their freedom. I hope any change in no-detention policy will be a reality by August and it will be left for the respective state," he said.

Cut-off list and marks for REET 2018 exam released

Board of Secondary Education Rajasthan (BSER Board) Ajmer has released the cut-off marks for the Rajasthan Eligibility Exam for Teacher (REET) 2018. Candidates can check the same by visiting the official website -- education.rajasthan.gov.in. The BSER board had conducted the exam on February 11 for the selection of third grade teachers. The duration of exam was t2.5 hours and was conducted in two shifts -- Morning shift (10:00 am to 12:30 pm) and the evening shift (2:30 pm to 5:00 pm). Candidates who has applied to be teachers for classes 6 to 8 appeared in the morning shift and for classes 1 to 5 in the evening shift. Before this, the REET exam was held in 2015 and the results for the same were declared in 2016. All the successful candidates will be awarded the REET certificate. The validity of the same is for three year. If they are unable to get the job within three years, their certificated will become invalid and will have to appear for the exam again. In November, BSER had invited application for the 25,000 vacant teachers’ posts. The minimum passing marks in the NEET is 60 percent and for the candidates belonging to the Schedule Tribes in scheduled areas of Rajasthan the passing percentage in 36 percent.

| More than 12 lakh untrained teachers apeared for the exam

More than 12 lakh untrained teachers appeared for the exam of diploma in elemantry education as conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). Formerly, NIOS was known as National Open School and was established in 1989 under the Ministry of Union Human Resource Development. For the diploma, more than 12 lakh teachers had enrolled in the program whose exam were conducted at 3186 different centers across the nations. In a statement NIOS said “The D.El.Ed program is a specifically designed package for in-service untrained teachers working in primary or upper primary schools of different states of the country.” “The program, run in pursuance of the Prime Minister’s digital India campaign, is a unique example of usage of informatic practice. For this course, right from the process of entrance to control of exam has been made online,” it added. A large number of teachers have registered for the course and are appearing for the exams. The data revealed by the NIOS is as follow: 1,62,457 untrained teachers have registered from West Bengal2,69,377 untrained teachers have registered from Bihar1,16,930 untrained teachers have registered from Assam66,323 untrained teachers have registered from Jharkhand52084 untrained teachers have registered from Odisha A senior NIOS official said that if they fail the exam this time, they will get another chance to clear the exam. Today, the teachers appeared for the exam of Pedagogic process in elementary schools and tomorrow they will appear for learning language at the elementary level. Under the Right to education Act, it is essential for the teachers to complete their diploma by March 2019 or they might end up losing their jobs.
